Jain or Hindi Temple in Gwalior Fort INDIAThe historical city of Gwalior is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. A new section of Gwalior has come into existence and is known as Lashkar. Lashkar lies at a distance of a few miles to the south of the old city. There can be observed exquisite palaces, splendid rock temples, elegant statues and white sandstone mosque all over Gwalior. The dominating and the most fascinating structure of the city of Gwalior is the Gwalior Fort. The fort stands on a steep mass of sandstone measuring 91 metres in height, 3.2 km in length and 823 metres in width.

Climate
The city of Gwalior faces extremes of temperatures. Temperature during the summers touches a high of 46 degrees centigrade while in winters it drops down to a minimum of 5 degrees. Monsoons arrive in the first week of June and continue until September. October to March is the best time to pay a visit to Gwalior.

» The Gwalior Fort - The Gwalior Fort is the most significant structure of the city of Gwalior. The fort elegantly stands on a mass sandstone. The Mughal emperor Babur was enchanted by the splendour and magnificence of the fort and described it as " the pearl among the fortresses of Hind". The outer walls of the fort are no less wonder for the onlookers. The wall runs 2 miles in length and soars up to a height of 35 feet.

» The Gujari Mahal - The Gujari Mahal symbolises the brilliance of medieval architecture. The Mahal was erected by Raja Mansingh as a tribute to his beloved Gujar queen Mrignayni. The palace houses an Archaeological Museum that exhibits a collection of antiquities. The statue of Shalbhanjika from Gyraspur is worth seeing.

Man Singh Palace Gwalior Fort India » Man Mandir Palace - Man Mandir Palace was built by Raja Mansingh between 1486 and 1517. Traces of the tiles that were once the pride of the exterior still remain to the amazement of the viewers. There are vast chambers inside the palace. These chambers were once in use of the royal ladies who would learn music from the masters of the time. The circular dungeons below were used by the Mughals to imprison culprits. Murad, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's brother, was also imprisoned here before being executed.

» Ghaus Mohammed's Tomb - The Afghan prince Ghaus Mohammad lies buried here. The Ghaus Mohammad's Tomb lies en route Gwalior Fort. The pierced stone technique is the key feature of the tomb. The tomb is also a part of the early Mughal architecture.

Shopping
Gwalior boasts of the oldest market places of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Chowk at Bara is one such destination. One can find the popular Chanderi Sarees here. Rajwara and Lashkar are the other shopping points where one can buy the famous handicrafts of Gwalior.
