About Jagannath Temple

Lord
Jagannath or the Lord of the universe is the presiding deity in Puri. And
the Jagannath Temple splendidly stands in dedication to the Lord. Soaring up
to a height of 65 metres, the temple is a predominating landmark of the
city. It is an epitome of the Orissan style of architecture. Puri, the abode
of Lord Jagannath, has been mystifying its tourists, visitors,
nature-worshippers, devotees and pilgrims for ages. Puri is located on the
shores of the Bay of Bengal and makes an idyllic sea resort as well.
History
The original build of the temple was a creation of the Kalinga ruler
Anantavarman Chodaganga. But it was only in the year 1174 CE that king
Ananga Bhima Deva rebuild the temple to give a shape in which it stands
today. 14 years were taken to complete the temple. And belief exists that
the image of Lord Jagannath was laid to rest in the Chilka Lake to save it
from the encroachers.
Architecture
On account of its brilliant architecture, the Jagannath Temple is counted
among the finest monumental wonders of the country. A 20 feet high wall
encloses the shrine. At the main entrance of the temple is a 11-meter high
pillar which has 16 sides. The temple complex covers an area of 400000 sq
feet. The temple is divided into four chambers namely Bhogmandir,
Natamandir, Jagamohana and Deul. Natamandir is a multi-pillared hall and is
reserved for music and dance functions. Jagamohana is the hall where
devotees gather for worshipping and Deul holds the deities.

» Jagannath Chariot - The Jagannath Chariot is a
square-shaped structure with each side measuring 35 feet in length. The
gigantic chariot soars up to a height of 45 feet and is provided with 16
wheels. Each of the wheel measures 7 feet in diameter.

The Rath Yatra - The Rath Yatra or the Chariot Festival is held in the
month of June-July. About 4000 people drag the chariot making it a splendid
sight for all who pile up to witness this grand festival.
» The Puri Beach The waters of the Bay of Bengal are
a delightful scene as they crash against the shore gathering themselves
again for yet another attack. The quiet environs of the beach and the lovely
people add to everyone's charm all the more. The soft white sands and the
natural surroundings are truly elevating and uplifting.
» Gundicha Mandir - At a distance of 3 km north of
Jagannath Temple is located the Gundicha Temple. During the Rath Yatra
festival Lord Jagannath stays here for one week. There is also a beautifully
laid-out garden around the temple which is no less delightful.
» Sakshi Gopal - Sakshi Gopal is a 20-km distance
from Puri. The temple has a full-size image of Lord Krishna or Gopal. Myth
exists that Lord Krishna arrived at the place to end a dispute between two
Brahmins. The word "sakshi" means witness and Lord Krishna was a
witness to the settlement of the dispute.
