
Mirik, surnamed as the youngest hill station of India is built around the
Sumendu lake which has a length of 1.25 km. The hill station energizes the
mind and soul of the visitors and boast of many lovely spots. The
refreshingly wild flowers, natural lakes and the ever growing forest of
Cryptomaria Japanica trees make Mirik a paradise of the tropical climate
areas. Surrounded by tea estates, orange orchards and cardomon plantations,
it also has a floating fountain in the middle of the lake. A bridge connect
it to a flower garden to the eastern bank. There are boating facility in the
lake.
The place of Mirik is situated at a distance of 49 km from Darjeeling and
52 km from Siliguri in the state of West Bengal and can be reached from both
the places easily. The beautiful hill is placed at a height of 1767 meters
above the sea level with a relatively lower population.
Climate
Mirik is pleasant all through the year. The temperature varies between a
minimum of 13°C in winters to a maximum of 30°C in the summers
respectively.
Major Attractions
» Sumendu Lake - The man-made lake is covered by
forest ridges and has a beautiful floating fountain in its center. The lake
is an ideal place for activities like swimming, boating, fishing and for
passing an evening by its sides. Tourist are attracted to the charm of the
man made lake for its surrounding beauty and the floating fountain.
» Deosi Dara - It is a vintage point from where the
views of the hills, plains and the Himalayan peaks like the Kanchenjunga and
the Dudhia are clearly visible. The sunset and the sun rise from the top of
the point is a mesmerising experience. Nearby is the Rameetay Dara and the
Kawlay Dara which are equally astonishing.
» Thurbo Tea Garden -A tour of the beautifully laid
out garden with views of the natural greenery surrounding it from every side
and workers plucking tea leaves are sights to be remembered for ever. Mirik
is engulfed by some of the best tea estates and the environment is
pleasurable for the nature lovers.
» Singha Devi Mandir - The revered Hindu temple is
situated to the left bank of the Sumendu lake. The place where the Devi is
situated is a sacred one decorated with great care. Statues of Hanuman Shiva
and Kalimata is placed on the temple premises. The devisthan is reached by a
small bridge.
