Nagaland East India

Nagaland PeoplesNagaland , declared as the 16th state of India in the year 1963, is a vibrant hill station rich in folklore, that have been passed down the ages through the word of mouth. The land of music and folk songs, chanting the brave deeds of their ancestral warriors and heroes, still awaits to be discovered by the unknown. Though the comfort of a five star culture is not present yet the courtesy and the hospitality of Nagas make up for the lacking.

Originally home to the Angamis, today it has taken the cosmopolitan city culture observing festivals of the Rengma, Zelian and the Kukis. It is home to 16 different individual ethnic group, and so is the most colourful state in the union. Nagaland has places for trekking, rock climbing and jungle camping. The state salutes its young soldiers who lost their lives to halt the Japanese invasion of India during the world war II. The cemetery located in their honour reads its epitaph as ' when you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow we gave our today".

Climate
The place is blessed with salubrious climate through out the year. October to March is the right time to discover this amazing land.

» Kohima
The present capital of Nagaland is a picturesque town located within the lush greenery of nature. Kohima is typically a hill station with panoramic views of the rugged hills and displays the exotic tribal culture of the northeast. The hardy and daring tribals, however, have mellowed down in the present days. Positioned in the eastern frontiers of the Himalayan mountain range, Kohima is noted for its slow pace of life, calm & serene environment and fresh, unpolluted air, which make a welcome change for an exhausted city sniffers.

» Kohima War Cemetery
This is a symbolic memorial raised as a citation for the supreme human sacrifice made by the officers of the allied forces to halt the march of the Japanese onslaught during the second world war. Kohima was the last war post of defense to the Japanese Army and had they won over, the Japanese would have gained entry to the territory of India. In present days, the cemetery is maintained by the Common Wealth War Graves Commissions. The epitaphs engraved on the bronze plagues the dear ones of the dead and is heart rendering

» The State Museum
The historical artifacts, the log drum, the tools and the ancestral weaponry, the old currencies, attire of warriors all glimpse back to the history of Nagaland. The dresses Naga women wear, the hearth of the kitchen all combine to form the traditional lifestyle depicted in its usual way of life

» Dimapur
The ancient capital of the 13th century Kachari rulers is an important commercial town of Nagaland. It is the axis around which the economy and developmental activities of the place revolve. Named after the Dimasa river that irrigates it, Dimapur is one of the fastest growing townships in the north-eastern region of India. The town is also a gateway to various places in Nagaland and Manipur.

»The Dzukou Valley
The Dzukou ValleyThe valley behind the Japhu range in completely covered with a carpet of wild flowers in the month of June to September. An ideal place for the nature lovers, the Dzukou valley freezes during the winters. The valley is called the valley of celestial charm to all those watching it carefully. Untouched by the fast life, the beauty is splendid with wild herbs sprouting by the side of the river banks.

» The Japhu Peak
An amazing peak for the adventure lovers and trekkers, the peak is situated at a height of 3048 ft above sea level. The experience of climbing the peak can be exhilarating as well as tiring to the newcomers. The beautiful view of the expansive vista of nature from the top of the peak compensates for the effort put in to reach the peak. ¤ The Zoological park
The park offers a glimpse of the fauna found in Nagaland. The rare Blythe's Tragopan is one of the protected species which is on the verge of extinction. The bird is at present reared in captivity. The state of Nagaland boasts of more than 360 varieties of rhododendrons that blooms in their brightest during the April month.

Shopping
Nagaland has a reputation for its handlooms and handicraft products. The beautifully woven tribal shawls, Naga mekelas, Naga hand bags have gained a wide acceptance. Outlets like the Gurttel offer a wide range of choices to take home as mementos.

How to Reach
By Air - Dimapur, the only airport in Nagaland, is connected by air to Delhi and Kolkata from where it is reachable to the rest of the country.

By Rail - Dimapur, the only and important railway station in Nagaland, is on the main line of North-Eastern Frontier Railway.

By Roads - All important towns and villages in the state are connected by the Nagaland State Transport Services. The state transport also operates a night deluxe service from Dimapur to Guwahati, Shillong and Mokokchung.
