India is an angler's paradise. This sport has existed from the days of British Raj, though not as popular as it is around the world, is gathering momentum very fast. The wide variety of fishes, innumerable fresh water streams and beautiful countryside as backdrop provide a perfect ambience to attract tourist for Angling.


India is famous for it's mighty Mahseer. The Mahseer was originally identified by Hamilton in 1822. The Mahseer is a magnificent sporting fish, it's the biggest member of the minnow and carp clan in the world and probably the hardest fighting freshwater sport fish that swims in a river. These include the putitor, or yellow-finned, mahseer (Tor putitora); the tor, or red-finned, mahseer (Tor tor); and the mosal, or copper, mahseer (Tor mosal). The putitor mahseer grows to a length of 2.7 meters; the male may reach an astounding 1.9 quintal (190 kilograms, or 418 pounds), and the female can grow to 2.2 quintal (220 kilograms, or 484 pounds). The tor mahseer can reach a length of 1.7 meters and a weight of 100 kilograms (220 pounds). The mosal mahseer does not grow longer than 1 meter.

The sport is not limited to Mahseer as there are Trouts and various other fishes to be found in many of the rivers. The brown Trouts were introduced in India around the turn of the century, these Trout grow to large sizes in big rivers and lakes--up to 7.5 kilograms in some high-altitude lakes. Brown trout are caught here on dry and wet flies and small spoons.
